An empowering celebration of sportswomen and host-nation heritage
The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup opened in Auckland with a powerful 10-minute ceremony celebrating the unity of co-hosts New Zealand and Australia. Rooted in cultural storytelling, it featured the Whai and Rainbow Serpent brought to life through large-scale fabric props and artwork by Miriama Grace Smith and Frances Belle Parker. Created in collaboration with Māori and First Nations advisors, the performance showcased over 200 young women and reached global audiences across 100+ countries, setting the tone for a tournament defined by unity and empowerment.
